Salt, iron and Celts
The salt mines of Hallstatt, in the Alps of Upper Austria, gave their name to a whole early Iron Age culture of central Europe, from about 800 BC. Later, Celtic tribes formed the kingdom of Noricum in the eastern Alps. Its iron was prized across the Mediterranean, and it traded with Rome long before it was absorbed.
