The first settlers
People first reached Barbados more than three thousand years ago, travelling by canoe up the chain of islands from South America. Later waves of farmers and potters from the Orinoco region settled the island, growing cassava and fishing its reefs. Their villages, pottery and shell tools have been found along the coasts.
