The gold of Varna
Some of the world's oldest worked gold comes from a cemetery at Varna, on the Black Sea, dated to about 4600 to 4200 BC. Farming villages had spread across the land from Anatolia long before, leaving tells, mounds of rebuilt settlements, such as Karanovo. By the second millennium BC the peoples later called Thracians lived here.
