Hills of the Great Lakes
The Twa, forest hunters and potters, are among the earliest known inhabitants of these green hills. During the first millennium AD, Bantu-speaking farmers who work iron settle the land, clearing forest for crops, and cattle herding becomes central to wealth and status. How the social groups later called Hutu, Tutsi and Twa took shape is still debated by historians.
