Canoes from the south
The Bahamas were among the last Caribbean islands to be settled. Between about AD 600 and 800, people from Hispaniola and Cuba crossed in dugout canoes and spread from island to island. They fished, gathered conch and grew cassava in the thin soil. Their descendants became the Lucayans, a branch of the Taino world.
