Before Bhutan
The valleys of the eastern Himalaya are home to small chiefdoms. To the south, on the Brahmaputra plain, the kingdom of Kamarupa rises in the fourth century. Buddhism arrives from Tibet, and tradition credits the seventh century Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo with founding the temples of Kyichu and Jambay.
