9000 BC to 250 BC
The first villages
Hunters and gatherers roamed Belize at the end of the last Ice Age. By about 1000 BC farming villages such as Cuello, in the north, were growing maize and making pottery, among the earliest known Maya communities. Lamanai, on the New River, would be inhabited for more than two thousand years, into Spanish times.
