Forest, savanna and traders
Kru-speaking peoples of the western forests and the Senufo of the northern savanna are among the longest established groups in the country. From around the fourteenth century, Mande traders known as Dyula, linked to the Mali Empire, travel and settle along the routes of the north to buy gold and kola nuts from the forest, spreading Islam and building market towns.
