Gold, stone and El Dorado
Before the Spanish arrive, many peoples share the land. At San Agustin, in the southern Andes, a culture carves hundreds of stone statues in the first centuries AD. In the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta the Tairona build terraced stone towns such as Ciudad Perdida. On the high plateau around Bogota the Muisca chiefdoms work gold, and their offerings at Lake Guatavita inspire the legend of El Dorado.
