A cultural crossroads
Before Europeans arrived, Costa Rica was a meeting zone between the cultures of Mesoamerica to the north and the Chibchan speaking peoples of the south. Its chiefdoms built towns such as Guayabo and carved stone spheres in the Diquís delta. Columbus anchored off the Caribbean coast, near today's Limón, in 1502.
