Empty islands
The Cape Verde islands, about 570 kilometres off the coast of Senegal, are uninhabited when Portuguese navigators reach them between 1456 and 1462. Settlement begins at Ribeira Grande, on Santiago, in 1462. The islands become a hub of the Atlantic slave trade, where captives from the mainland are traded on to Europe and the Americas.
