Waitukubuli
Several thousand years ago foragers travelling by canoe from South America reached the island. Later, farming and pottery making peoples from the Orinoco region settled its river mouths. By the time Europeans arrived, the Kalinago held it and called it Waitukubuli, meaning tall is her body, for its steep volcanic mountains.
