Stonehenge and the Britons
Farmers raised Stonehenge in stages from about 3000 BC. By the Iron Age the island was home to Celtic-speaking Britons in many tribes, with the Caledonians in the far north. Julius Caesar landed in 55 and 54 BC but did not stay. Over the next century trade with Roman Gaul grew, and southern kings minted their own coins.
