The stone circles
Long before any kingdom is recorded here, people along the Gambia River raise more than a thousand stone monuments, carved from laterite, over burial sites. The Senegambian stone circles, including those at Wassu and Kerbatch, were built over many centuries, between roughly the third century BC and the sixteenth century AD. They are now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
