Forest, coast and gold
Rice farmers such as the Baga and Nalu live on the mangrove coast, and peoples such as the Kissi, Kpelle and Loma in the southern forest. In the north east, Mande speaking farmers work the Bure gold fields near the upper Niger. Their gold travels north to the Ghana Empire and across the Sahara to North Africa.
