Illyrians and Greeks
In the first millennium BC Illyrian peoples such as the Liburnians and the Delmatae held the coast and its hinterland. Greeks from Paros founded Pharos on the island of Hvar in 384 BC, and Issa on Vis became another Greek town. In 229 BC Rome fought its first war against the Illyrian kingdom of Queen Teuta, to the south.
