Ayiti
The Taino called the island Ayiti, a land of mountains, a name Haiti later took back. They lived in chiefdoms across Hispaniola. On 24 December 1492 Columbus's flagship, the Santa Maria, ran aground on the north coast, and he left behind a small garrison, La Navidad, the first Spanish settlement in the Americas.
