Before Rome
Farmers settled the Carpathian Basin around 6000 BC, and Bronze Age villages grew into large mounds. From the fourth century BC Celtic peoples moved in; the Eravisci built a hill town on Gellert Hill in today's Budapest. East of the Danube lived Dacians, and later the Iazyges, Iranian-speaking nomads who arrived in the first century AD.
