4000 BC to 430
Newgrange and the first farmers
Hunter-gatherers reach Ireland after the last Ice Age, and farming arrives around 3800 BC. Around 3200 BC farmers in the Boyne valley build Newgrange, a great passage tomb older than the pyramids of Giza. Celtic languages take hold over the following millennia, and Rome, which conquers Britain, never invades Ireland.
