2600 BC to 1900 BC
The Indus cities
Around 2600 BC the cities of the Indus Valley, such as Harappa, Mohenjo-daro and Dholavira, flourish across the northwest of the subcontinent. Their planned streets and drains are unmatched for the time. By about 1900 BC they decline, and later centuries see the rise of kingdoms in the Ganges plain.
