3200 BC to 640 BC
Elam
Long before the Persians, Elam rules the lowlands of today's Khuzestan and the highlands of Fars, with capitals at Susa and Anshan. It develops its own script around 3000 BC and fights the kings of Mesopotamia for two thousand years, until Ashurbanipal of Assyria sacks Susa around 647 BC.
