An empty island
Iceland had no native people. Irish monks may have lived there before the Norse, according to the twelfth-century Book of the Icelanders. Norse sailors found the island in the mid ninth century, and by tradition Ingolfur Arnarson settled at Reykjavik in 874, the first permanent settler.
