First settlers
The islands seem to have been settled from around the eighth century AD, mainly by Bantu speaking people from the East African coast, at a time when Austronesian sailors were also reaching nearby Madagascar. Villages such as Dembeni on Mayotte trade with the Persian Gulf and the Swahili coast. The islanders' language, Shikomori, is close to Swahili.
