The Treveri and Rome
Before Rome, the land belonged to the Treveri, a Celtic people whose large hillfort on the Titelberg, in the far southwest, minted its own coins. Julius Caesar conquered them in the 50s BC. Under the empire the region lay in the province of Gallia Belgica, close to Trier, which became one of the capitals of the late empire.
