Monoikos
Ligurian peoples lived on this rocky coast before Greeks from Massalia, today's Marseille, began trading along it. The Greeks called the harbour Monoikos, after a temple of Heracles, the origin of the name Monaco. Rome conquered the Ligurians, and around 6 BC Augustus raised a great trophy at La Turbie, on the hill above the port, to celebrate his conquest of the Alpine tribes.
