Settled from the sea
Madagascar is among the last large landmasses settled by people. Seafarers from Southeast Asia, speaking a language related to those of Borneo, arrive in the first millennium, joined by people from East Africa. Over the centuries many separate kingdoms form, among them the Sakalava on the west coast and the Merina in the central highlands.
