6000 BC to 1000 BC
First farmers
Farming reached the Vardar valley early, and Neolithic villages such as Tumba Madzari, on the edge of today's Skopje, date from around 6000 BC. By the first millennium BC the region was home to the Paeonians in the Vardar valley, the Dardanians in the north and Illyrian groups to the west.
