Djenné-Djeno
Along the inland delta of the Niger, farmers and fishers found Djenné-Djeno around 250 BC. It grows into one of the oldest known towns south of the Sahara, a trading centre for iron, rice, fish and copper. Its ruins, beside the later town of Djenné, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
