An island without people
Mauritius rose from the sea in volcanic eruptions about eight million years ago and, like Réunion and Rodrigues, had no native people. Arab sailors seem to have known it, and it appears on early maps as Dina Arobi. Portuguese ships visit in the early 1500s, but nobody settles, and the island belongs to birds such as the dodo.
