A chain of atolls
Some 1,190 low coral islands, grouped in 26 atolls, stretch about 800 kilometres down the Indian Ocean southwest of India. Settlers from South Asia, likely from Sri Lanka and southern India, arrive centuries before the common era. The early islanders are Buddhist, and their language, Dhivehi, is related to Sinhala.
