Painters and farmers
For thousands of years hunter-gatherers live around Lake Malawi and paint the rock shelters of Chongoni, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the first millennium AD Bantu speaking farmers who work iron settle the region, clearing land for crops and fishing the lake. Their descendants include many of Malawi's peoples.
