500 BC to 200
Nok, the first sculptors
On the Jos Plateau and the valleys around it, the Nok culture flourishes from about 500 BC to AD 200. Its farmers make striking terracotta heads and figures, among the oldest sculptures in Africa south of the Sahara, and they are among the first in West Africa to smelt iron. No state rules the land yet.
