Lakes and volcanoes
Before the Spanish arrived, Nahua speaking Nicarao and Chorotega peoples farmed the fertile Pacific lowlands around Lake Nicaragua and Lake Managua. The Caribbean side, wet and forested, was home to other peoples, including the ancestors of the Miskito. The country takes its name from a chief, Nicarao, whom the Spanish met in 1522.
