Megaliths and mounds
The oldest monuments in the Netherlands are the hunebedden of Drenthe, large stone tombs built by farmers of the Funnel Beaker culture between about 3400 and 2850 BC. Much later, people on the northern coast lived on terps, artificial mounds raised against the tides. When Julius Caesar reached the Rhine in the 50s BC, Celtic and Germanic peoples shared the delta.
