Ancient highlands
People have lived in New Guinea for more than 40,000 years. In the highlands, at Kuk swamp, farmers were draining land and growing crops thousands of years ago, among the earliest farming anywhere. The rugged terrain keeps groups apart, and today the country has more than 800 languages.
