Mehrgarh and the Indus cities
At Mehrgarh, in Balochistan, farmers grow wheat and barley from around 7000 BC, among the earliest in South Asia. Later, Mohenjo-daro in Sindh and Harappa in Punjab become great cities of the Indus Valley Civilization, which flourishes from about 2600 to 1900 BC along the Indus and its tributaries. The river has been the spine of this land ever since.
