Biskupin and the first Slavs
Bronze and Iron Age peoples of the Lusatian culture built fortified settlements here, the best known at Biskupin, a wooden town on a lake built around 740 BC. In Roman times Germanic peoples such as the Goths passed through. Slavic tribes settled the land from about the sixth century, among them the Polans of the Warta basin, who gave Poland its name.
