Vinca and the Scordisci
Some of Europe's earliest farming villages grew along the Danube here. Lepenski Vir, in the Iron Gates gorge, was home to fishers and foragers more than 8,000 years ago, and the Vinca culture, named after a site near Belgrade, flourished from about 5400 to 4500 BC. After 279 BC the Celtic Scordisci settled the region and founded Singidunum, the future Belgrade.
