Island peoples
People have lived in the Solomon Islands for many thousands of years, and Austronesian speakers arrive about 3,000 years ago. The islands are home to many small communities with dozens of languages. In 1568 the Spanish navigator Alvaro de Mendana visits and gives the islands their European name.
