Celts, Quadi and Romans
Celtic peoples built hill forts here, and in the first century BC a large settlement stood on Bratislava's castle hill, where Celtic coins named Biatec were minted. Later the Germanic Quadi lived north of the Danube, Rome's frontier. During the Marcomannic Wars, a Roman inscription carved on the castle rock at Trencin records legionaries wintering there in 179.
