Rock shelters and ivory carvers
Stone tools found in rock shelters in the north show that people lived here thousands of years ago. By the fifteenth century the coast belongs to peoples the Portuguese call the Sapi, including the Bullom and Temne. Their carvers make soapstone figures, the nomoli, and later sell finely carved ivory salt cellars and horns to Portuguese traders.
