300 BC to 1000
Stone circles
Long before written records, people along the Gambia and Saloum rivers raise more than a thousand circles of standing stones over burial mounds, between the third century BC and the sixteenth century AD. On the coast, the Saloum delta keeps huge mounds of shells left by generations of fishing communities. The stone circles of Senegambia are now a World Heritage site.
