Rivers and forests
For thousands of years Suriname belongs to Indigenous peoples: Arawak speaking Lokono and Carib speaking Kalina along the coast, and groups such as the Trio and Wayana in the southern forests. From the 1600s Dutch, English and French traders set up small posts on the rivers, but none lasts until the English arrive in 1650.
