Empty islands
Portuguese navigators reach the uninhabited islands of São Tomé and Príncipe around 1470 and 1471. Lasting settlement begins in 1493, when the crown sends colonists, convicts and Jewish children taken from their families. The islands lie in the Gulf of Guinea, close to the equator and a few hundred kilometres off the African coast.
