Maya and Pipil
Western El Salvador lay on the southern edge of the Maya world. Around 600 a volcanic eruption buried the farming village of Joya de Cerén, preserving it like a Central American Pompeii. Later, Nahua speaking Pipil peoples moved in from the north and founded the domain of Cuzcatlán, which the Spanish found in the 1520s.
