Ban Chiang
Rice farmers have lived in the region for thousands of years. At Ban Chiang in the northeast, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, villagers buried their dead with painted pottery and bronze tools, and bronze working there goes back to the second millennium BC. The Tai peoples who give the country its name arrive much later, moving south from what is now southern China.
