First settlers
Lapita voyagers reach Tonga about 3,000 years ago, among the first people to settle Polynesia. The islands lie in three main groups, Tongatapu in the south, Ha'apai in the centre and Vava'u in the north. Their pottery and voyaging canoes carry people on toward Samoa and the rest of Polynesia.
