Eight islands
Polynesian voyagers, many tracing their origins to Samoa and Tonga, settle these atolls; the people of Nui descend partly from Gilbertese settlers and still speak a Gilbertese language. The name Tuvalu means eight standing together, for the eight inhabited islands of the past.
