Đông Sơn and Âu Lạc
In the Red River valley the Đông Sơn culture casts great bronze drums from the first millennium BC. Legend tells of the Hùng kings of Văn Lang. In the third century BC An Dương Vương builds the spiral citadel of Cổ Loa, near today's Hanoi, as capital of Âu Lạc, which Zhao Tuo, ruler of Nanyue in southern China, annexes in the early second century BC.
