Painters and farmers
San hunter gatherers left thousands of rock paintings on the plateau, especially in the Matobo Hills. From the first millennium AD, farmers speaking Bantu languages bring iron, crops and cattle. Just south of the Limpopo, the kingdom of Mapungubwe grows rich in the thirteenth century on the ivory and gold trade, a forerunner of Great Zimbabwe.
